Water Conservation Tips
Indoor Water Saving Tips
- Check toilets for leaks. A leaky toilet can waste 200 gallons a day — about 6,000 gallons a month.
- Put a bottle in your toilet tank. Fill a plastic bottle with water and pebbles, place it in the tank, and save 5–10 gallons a day.
- Turn off water when not in use. Shutting off the tap while brushing teeth or shaving saves 3 gallons a day.
- Take shorter showers. Cutting your shower by 1–2 minutes saves up to 700 gallons a month.
- Save cold water while waiting for hot. Collect it in a container and use it for plants or cleaning — saves 300 gallons a month.
- Fix leaks right away. Repairing a dripping faucet or pipe can save 20 gallons a day per leak.
- Run only full loads. Use the dishwasher and washing machine only when full to save 300–800 gallons a month.
- Keep drinking water in the fridge. Skip running the tap until it’s cold — saves 200–300 gallons a month.
Outdoor Water Saving Tips
- Water your lawn only when needed. If grass springs back after stepping on it, it doesn’t need water. Saves 750–1,500 gallons a month.
- Wash your car on the lawn. When allowed, wash your car on grass so the used water also waters the yard.
- Cover your pool. A cover reduces evaporation and saves about 1,000 gallons a month.
- Use a rain sensor on sprinklers. This device stops watering after rainfall and prevents waste.
