Avoiding Scams and Scammers
Newnan Utilities is committed to ensuring the safety and security of our customers. Below are some tips and advice to help protect you from utility scams.
Request or Demand for Payment
SCAM:
- Someone claims to be your “utility or energy provider” stating your power would be cut off due to lack of payment.
FACT:
Newnan Utilities will never call and ask for:
- Payment over the phone
- Your bank account information
- Your credit card number
NEVER give out your bank/credit card/Social Security/other personal financial information unless you’ve initiated the conversation.
Government/Public Agency Wants to Pay Your Bill
SCAM:
- Someone claims to work for a public/government agency and offers ways to pay your utility bill.
FACT:
- NEVER give out your bank/credit card/Social Security/other personal financial information or Newnan Utilities account number to an unsolicited caller.
Credit on Account
SCAM:
- Someone claims to be with Newnan Utilities stating they need bank account information because you are due a $100 credit.
FACT:
- No such program exists.
Visitor to Your Home Requesting Payment
SCAM:
- Someone comes to your home posing as a Newnan Utilities employee to collect payment, bank information, or Social Security information.
FACT:
- Newnan Utilities will never send an employee to your home or business to ask for payment, bank information, or Social Security information.
Request to Enter Home
SCAM:
- Someone impersonating a Newnan Utilities employee entered a local home and stole from the resident.
FACT:
If you haven’t called to request service or are not expecting a visit from Newnan Utilities, request proper identification. Our employees will:
- Wear a Newnan Utilities uniform and/or
- Arrive in a Newnan Utilities vehicle with our logo and/or
- Present an ID with their name, photo, and Newnan Utilities logo
NEVER let someone you suspect to be impersonating a Newnan Utilities employee into your home. If you suspect someone at your door is impersonating a Newnan Utilities employee, call 911 and then call us at 770-683-5516.
Past Due Accounts:
- When an account is past due, the primary number listed on the Newnan Utilities account will receive a text message informing the customer of the past due balance.
- If a payment is due, customers may make a secure payment in one of three ways:
• Pay online through our secure customer portal
• Call us at 770-683-5516 to make a payment through our secure phone system
• Pay in person at 70 Sewell Road, Newnan, GA 30263
Remember:
- NEVER give out your bank/credit card/Social Security/other personal financial information unless you initiated the conversation.
- NEVER let anyone in your home that you feel unsure of.
